Fram dansar ein haugkall
An Ogre Dances Forth

From “Haugtussa” by Arne Garborg (1851-1924)
TRANSLATION BY DR. ALF LUNDER KNUDSEN

An ogre dances forth, handsome and blue,
His hair flowing through a golden band,
He tries to seduce/ravish Veslemøy,
And tunes stream around him.
Oh beautiful you!
With me you shall live;
In the Blue Mountain you shall treadle
Your silver spinning wheel.

During the day I’m the brown bear,
Which leaps in the forest wide
And bathe my shaggy fur in the deepest lakes
And trudge in violent streams
And play on the beach
And rule the land
As far as your eye can see.

But you shall become a Blue Mountain bride
In dazzling silver and silk
And never feel blue or gloom
In all your living days.
Oh beautiful you!
With me you shall live;
In the Blue Mountain you shall treadle
Your silver spinning wheel.
